Mature Tree Care and Tree Removal

Established trees on your property may not look like they need as much care as their newer counterparts, but looks can be deceiving. Keep an eye on older trees to make sure they remain healthy and don’t become a danger to your home or other trees in your yard. Here are some tips for caring for mature trees and when you’ll need to do a tree removal.

Caring for Mature Trees

The first thing you want to do with older trees is inspect them for problems such as fungus, diseases or insect invasion. You can do this by checking the new growth and the look of the leaves and upper branches. If anything looks drastically different than last year, call a specialist. You should also have a professional look at your trees every 1-2 years for an expert opinion.

If your tree is in good shape, keep it growing well by providing mulch along its roots. This will help hold in moisture that would otherwise be lost. Just be sure to keep the mulch off the trunk as it may cause the bark to rot and deteriorate.

Trees often need to be pruned and mature trees are no different. What is different is that old trees require a professional to trim back branches because they are often high up and in danger of collapsing. An expert will know how to safely take them down and dispose of them as diseased branches can spread to other healthy trees if placed nearby.

Tree Removal

Sometimes a whole tree is diseased or destroyed by lightning or bug infestations. In these cases, they will need to be removed. Again, this is a job for a professional who can take the tree down safely and remove large stumps. Be sure to ask your contractor whether stump removal is included in their pricing as some charge separate for the service.

Keeping up with your mature trees is just as important as taking care of new ones. If you suspect yours needs care you cannot give, call a contractor who has experience in tree removal and care.
